The request was to show the client's brand logo joining the other main players. The visual of a popular website used to watch these kinds of tokens was used to help viewers quickly identify information they're interested in as they scroll down their feed.
3D was used because it was especially buzzy at the time due to an app release (Blender, perhaps).
To ensure consistent quality across the production, I used Illustrator to recreate exact replicas of the logos on the coins. That way I could ensure they are all vector and would all behave the same when applying the 3D FX.
I remember I was immediately enthralled by the animation of the Llama character for the background website's brand. So I created a few extras to try to make sure I wasn't tricked into focusing too much on the best visual and not the message.
I learned a lot about designing in 3D on this project. So much so that I fried my old MacBook Pro's processor and had to get a new machine. This new machine isn't made for 3D other than basics. But I'm very eager to see what developers will have up their sleeve on the iPad Pro 12.9" as Apple slowly allows them to use the full 10GB of RAM; 5 always being reserved for the OS now.
